AI-driven creative scales personalization beyond DCO.
Who & For What
For a Tokyo-based brand manager at an automotive or tech brand planning a global product launch, seeking new ways to drive engagement and measure attention beyond traditional reach metrics.
vs. Japan Play
This differs from typical Japanese DCO deployments by major agencies like Dentsu or Hakuhodo, which often rely on pre-defined asset variations, by attempting real-time generative content creation guided by AI.
Tokyo Take
While the generative AI aspect is compelling, the actual deployment of real-time contextual DOOH at scale, especially with direct user interaction, is limited by Japan's DOOH inventory capabilities and privacy regulations. Japanese consumers might also be wary of highly personalized, AI-generated content without clear consent.
Aura Motors recently launched its global campaign for the new Quantum EV, collaborating with Nexus Creative. The campaign, which debuted this month, employs a real-time generative AI platform, Cognito AI, to deliver dynamically personalized digital out-of-home (DOOH) and social media content across key markets.
This initiative moves beyond static creative variants, aiming for true individualized messaging. The Cognito AI platform analyzes local context data—such as weather, time of day, and even nearby event schedules—to render bespoke ad copy and visuals on DOOH screens. On social platforms, the system allows users to interactively "co-create" their own ad variations, extending the brand's reach through user-generated content that is algorithmically guided. The underlying ambition is to shift advertising from broad targeting to micro-segment engagement, with a stated focus on attention metrics and direct user interaction rather than just impressions.
The core of the campaign's approach is a continuously learning generative model. For DOOH, a prompt library is pre-loaded with brand guidelines and product features, which Cognito AI then combines with real-time data feeds to produce localized messages. An example seen in London's Piccadilly Circus showed a Quantum EV ad adapting its background and copy to reflect the current rain and suggest a nearby indoor event. For social, users are presented with a choice of AI-generated visual styles and narrative prompts, allowing them to customize a short video ad featuring the Quantum. This attempts to turn ad consumption into an active, rather than passive, experience.
While other brands have experimented with dynamic creative optimization (DCO), Aura Motors' deployment aims for a higher degree of generative variability and real-time responsiveness. Previous DCO efforts typically relied on pre-rendered asset libraries and rule-based combinations. This campaign, by contrast, suggests an actual generative capability producing novel outputs within brand parameters, similar in principle to how large language models create unique text. The ambition is to achieve a level of creative fluidity previously impractical at this scale.
The campaign's early performance metrics, though limited to test markets, indicate higher dwell times on DOOH and increased share rates on social platforms compared to Aura's previous campaigns. This points to a potential shift in how creative agencies will structure teams and brief AI partners, moving towards defining brand guardrails and prompt engineering rather than traditional asset production.
"The goal was not just personalization, but participation," stated Nexus Creative's Chief Creative Officer, emphasizing the shift from passive viewing to active engagement.
This approach tests the scalability of truly adaptive creative, challenging the conventional wisdom that high-quality, personalized content is inherently labor-intensive.
